In 1990, the Government of Canada and the Government of the United States signed a treaty creating the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America, launching the prestigious Fulbright Program in Canada. Through direct support for more than one thousand exceptional scholars, in all disciplines, in every region, based entirely on merit, and in both official languages, Fulbright Canada has more than met its original mandate of enhancing mutual understanding, building intellectual capacity, and cultivating future leaders.
Twenty years later, we are using this anniversary to mount a series of events designed specifically to celebrate the success of our grantees, highlight the accomplishments of our alumni, and salute the foresight and generosity of our partners in the university community, in government, and in the private sector.
Among other things, we will be hosting a gala anniversary celebration in Ottawa on September 23rd, featuring Dr. Ruth Simmons, President of Brown University. All alumni are invited to attend. There will be a lot of excitement around this event, including a contest, a new mentorship program and a chance for Fulbright Canada alumni to host their own celebrations. We will also be mounting two very exciting lecture series. The first, entitled ‘Directing the Power of Human Knowledge’, features some of the most celebrated and controversial thinkers in the two countries, addressing key economic, social, political, and environmental issues of the day. The second series, offered in conjunction with the Center on Public Diplomacy at USC, is entitled ‘New Directions in Public Diplomacy’.
