Solutions to sustainability issues are needed around the world and across many disciplines. This Chair illustrates Lakehead’s determination to more fully understand and respond to our world’s social and ecological challenges.
Lakehead University is a comprehensive university with a reputation for a multidisciplinary teaching approach that emphasizes collaborative learning and independent critical thinking. More than 8,700 students and 1,850 faculty and staff learn and work at campuses located in Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ontario. Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Water and the Environment at the University of Lethbridge

Water is at the nexus of Alberta’s social, environmental and economic prosperity. Population growth in Alberta, in Canada and globally, coupled with water needs for economic purposes including energy, agriculture and food, as well as the water requirements for a sustainable environment are key areas of research focus at the University of Lethbridge. The university’s multi and trans-disciplinary approach to water research explores ways to conserve water, diversify water sources, protect water quality and mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. By collaborating with stakeholders in the broad water community, research findings are translated to inform public policy, improve water management practices and to develop climate adaptation solutions that improve sustainability outcomes.

Specializations: Water quality and safety, water resource and environmental modelling, water resources management practices, development and implementation, consumption patterns, riparian ecosystem management, water economics, water and society, water-related health issues and the relation of water resources and climate change.

Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Water, Environment, and Clean Energy at the University of Regina

A history of twenty years in clean energy research excellence combined with a vast network of partners position the University of Regina as the ideal location to host the Visiting Chair in Water, Environment and Clean Energy. Creating world-wide sustainable energy solutions is a priority at the University of Regina and the chair-holder’s interests will contribute to our ongoing pursuit though research activities related, but not limited to carbon-capture, utilization and storage, energy policy, environmental issues and public engagement. Research strength in this area will allow the chair-holder the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse community of highly qualified personal and to work within the university’s relevant research centres and institutes, which include: Clean Energy Technology Research Institute, the Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Communities, the Prairie Adaptation Research Collaborative, the Institute for of Environmental Change and Society and the Centre for the study of Science and Innovation Policy. Additionally, the University of Regina has partnerships with SaskPower, which operates the world’s first commercial-scale power plant with CCS technology at Boundary Dam Power Station, as well as the Petroleum Technology Research Centre, which operates Aquistore, a demonstration site for deep underground storage of CO2.

The Richardson College for the Environment is a major first step in implementing the university’s academic plan to enhance science education and research. The College specializes in a number of key emerging areas of environmental research and study: forest ecology; urban ecology; the global north; water resources; and environment and health.
