Fulbright Canada hosted a 25th Anniversary gala on September 18, 2015, at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa. The keynote speaker was Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, W.A. Macdonald Distinguished Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and Vancouver Island University Shqwi qwal for Indigenous Dialogue. Atleo was Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations from 2009 to 2014 and is a major figure in the first nations community. Chief Atleo spoke eloquently and with great passion about the challenges facing aboriginal youth and about the importance of expanding educational opportunities for indigenous youth and other underrepresented populations. Mr. Clint Davis, Vice President, Aboriginal Banking for the TD Bank Group and an alumnus of the Fulbright Canada program, introduced Chief Atleo, shared comments from his own Fulbright experiences, and announced a new US$750,000 commitment from the bank. U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman offered remarks on behalf of the U.S. government and Dr. Peter Bohm, Senior Associate Deputy Minister at Global Affairs Canada, spoke on behalf of the Canadian government.
