Fulbright Canada and the University of Washington Renew Partnership for Arctic Studies

Fulbright Canada and the University of Washington announced the renewal of their partnership on May 19, 2023. This marks the third signing of the five-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two organizations. Since 2013, the University of Washington has hosted a Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair in Arctic Studies. The partnership promotes research on health, human wellness, energy and security, and climate change for Arctic Studies.

The University of Washington has a long history of innovative research, student learning, and community engagement, making it an ideal partner for Fulbright Canada. The two organizations established a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair at the university in 2006, and since then, the partnership has flourished. The first Fulbright Canada Visiting Chair in Arctic Studies was Tony Penikett, former Premier of Yukon, who encouraged further collaboration with scientists, scholars, and professionals. The collaboration between Fulbright Canada and the University of Washington has resulted in nine Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair in Arctic Studies scholars at the University of Washington. This has generated new collaborative research and brought environmental, marine, community, and anthropological research to the forefront.

“The Fulbright Canada Chair in Arctic Studies has created profound experiences for our students. For example, one of our undergraduates travelled to Arctic Canada to participate in a research project in an Inuit community in Nunavut with one of our former Chairs in Arctic Studies. Her skills were later recognized by the National Snow and Ice Data Center, where she now has a position in Arctic Studies,” said Dr. Nadine C. Fabbi, Interim Director of the University of Washington’s Canadian Studies Center Arctic & International Relations.

Dr. Ana Mari Cauce, an alumna of the Fulbright Canada Board of Directors, became the University of Washington’s 33rd president in 2015. She continues to support the collaboration between Fulbright Canada and the University of Washington for Arctic Studies. The partnership has been successful in promoting research and discovering new knowledge. It is a testament to both organizations’ commitment to supporting exploration and discovery in the Arctic and for the people of the Arctic.

“The partnership between Fulbright Canada and Canadian Studies at the University of Washington provides an opportunity to support the meaningful and impactful research done at the Center about and for the people of the Arctic. We are thrilled to enter the next phase in this incredible partnership”, said Dr. Michael Hawes, President and CEO of Fulbright Canada.
