Artificial intelligence is reshaping every sector of society, from healthcare and finance to education and critical infrastructure. Yet as AI systems become more capable and more deeply integrated into daily life, they also introduce new security challenges that demand innovative solutions. For Dr. Ali Dehghantanha, a 2025–2026 Fulbright Canada Short-term Entrepreneurship Award recipient, addressing these emerging risks has become both a research mission and an entrepreneurial opportunity.
As a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence at the University of Guelph, Dr. Dehghantanha has spent his career advancing cybersecurity science while helping build Canada's capacity in cyber education, research, and innovation. As founding director of the Canada Cyber Foundry and Co-Founder and CEO of Avaly.AI, he has focused on translating cutting-edge research into practical tools that help organizations deploy artificial intelligence more securely and responsibly.
Through his Fulbright Canada Short-term Entrepreneurship Award, Dr. Dehghantanha completed a residency at the University of California, Berkeley's Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity, where he pursued his project, Self-Healing AI Security: U.S. Go-to-Market Validation at UC Berkeley. The residency provided an opportunity to engage with leading researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and industry stakeholders to explore how innovative AI security technologies can be successfully commercialized while meeting the evolving needs of organizations operating in increasingly complex digital environments.
Rather than viewing cybersecurity as a one-time assessment, Dr. Dehghantanha's work advances the concept of continuous AI security, developing systems capable of monitoring, governing, and responding to emerging risks as they occur. During his residency, he refined commercialization strategies, validated product concepts with prospective users, and explored partnerships to bring these innovations to organizations seeking trustworthy, resilient AI solutions.
The project exemplifies how entrepreneurship can serve as a bridge between discovery and impact. Scientific breakthroughs alone do not improve lives unless they can be translated into practical products, services, and technologies that address real-world challenges. By combining rigorous academic research with customer discovery, market validation, and cross-border collaboration, Dr. Dehghantanha demonstrated how entrepreneurial leadership can accelerate the responsible adoption of emerging technologies while strengthening cybersecurity resilience on both sides of the Canada–United States border.
Dr. Dehghantanha's experience illustrates the vision behind the Fulbright Canada Entrepreneurship Initiative. Designed for innovators who are ready to move ideas beyond the laboratory or classroom, the initiative supports entrepreneurs, researchers, scholars, and professionals as they explore commercialization pathways, develop strategic partnerships, and transform research into solutions with meaningful social and economic impact. Participants benefit from immersive cross-border residencies, mentorship, and access to entrepreneurial networks that help accelerate innovation while strengthening ties between Canada and the United States.
As artificial intelligence continues to transform society, the need for secure, trustworthy, and responsibly governed systems has never been greater. Through his Fulbright experience, Dr. Dehghantanha demonstrated how research excellence, entrepreneurial thinking, and international collaboration can come together to address these challenges. His work stands as a compelling example of Fulbright's power to foster innovation that extends beyond academic discovery—creating practical solutions that strengthen economies, support technological resilience, and improve lives.
