The Future of Food Starts Close to Home

Keyia

Entrepreneurship is often associated with new products and emerging technologies, but some of its most meaningful contributions can be found in efforts to strengthen communities and improve everyday life. For Keyia Yalcin, innovation is rooted in sustainability, resilience, and local impact.

As the owner of Fishnet Restaurant, a real estate entrepreneur, and an educator, Yalcin has dedicated her career to developing solutions that support local economies while addressing broader social challenges. Through the Fulbright Canada Short-term Entrepreneurship Award, she explored how small-scale aquaponics systems can help stabilize local restaurants, improve access to nutritious food, and strengthen community health outcomes.

Hosted at McGill University, her research examined the potential of integrated fish cultivation and hydroponic agriculture to provide year-round food production while reducing environmental impacts and supply-chain pressures. By investigating how hyperlocal food systems can support small businesses and urban communities, Yalcin is advancing a model of entrepreneurship that places sustainability and public benefit at its core.

Keyia’s work demonstrates that innovation does not always require large-scale infrastructure or complex technologies. Sometimes, transformative change begins at the community level, where creative thinking and entrepreneurial leadership can generate lasting economic, environmental, and social benefits. Through her research and business leadership, Yalcin is helping to build more resilient communities while illustrating the power of entrepreneurship to address some of society's most pressing challenges.

Yalcin's project was made possible through the Fulbright Canada Short-term Entrepreneurship Award, which supports entrepreneurs through a four-week residency to pursue independent research, explore new markets, develop business strategies, and build meaningful cross-border partnerships. As part of the Fulbright Canada Entrepreneurship Initiative (FCEI), award recipients also benefit from mentorship, entrepreneurial programming, accelerator resources, and access to Canada's dynamic innovation ecosystem, equipping them with the knowledge, networks, and support needed to translate innovative ideas into lasting social and economic impact.
