INTRODUCING THE 2019-2020 FULBRIGHT CANADA GRANTEES

Fulbright Canada is pleased to formally introduce the 2019-2020 class of Fulbright Scholars, Fulbright Students, and Killam Fellows! The prestigious Fulbright award is granted to highly accomplished individuals who are both exceptional scholars in their respective fields and engaged community leaders. We are certain that they will, each in their own way, advance our knowledge of critical social, economic, and scientific issues while, at the same time, help us to enhance mutual understanding between our two great countries.

The incoming cohort is comprised of grant recipients from the three core Fulbright Canada programs: the Fulbright Scholar Program, for established scholars and professionals in their field, the Fulbright Student Program, for students who are pursuing a master’s degree, a PhD, or conducting independent research, and the Killam Fellowships Program, for promising young leaders pursuing an undergraduate degree.

“I am extremely pleased to welcome these exceptional individuals to the Fulbright family, and to recognize both their incredible accomplishments and their outstanding promise. They are, each in their own right, excellent scholars, inspiring thought leaders, innovative researchers, caring teachers, and burgeoning community leaders. ”
- Dr. Michael Hawes, Fulbright Canada CEO and alumnus.

These extraordinary individuals all share a commitment to create a more productive, more caring, and more prosperous world, and are committed to doing so through their research, their teaching, their studies, and their community outreach. During their residential academic exchange experience, the grantees are encouraged to engage fully in their host community. Our experience is that this allows them to enhance their cultural understanding and, in many instances, expand and enrich their studies and their research. Through the exchange process, and along with a strategy for active collaboration, we have witnessed the beginnings of long-term research partnerships, long-term institutional partnerships, and, no less importantly, personal and professional friendships that often last a lifetime.

Much of the work taking place this year focuses on identifying innovative solutions to emergent challenges faced by both nations and by the global community. Dr. Carmen Logie, Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Public Health, from the University of Toronto, will study disparities in health care in Canada and in the United States to understand the role of socio-cultural and contextual factors in shaping implementation outcomes and strategies. She will take up her award at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Fulbright Student, Sean Smillie, from the University of British Columbia, will be focusing on technically informed analysis of energy and environmental policy in the two countries. He will be taking up his award at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Fulbright Canada’s programs are designed to support innovation and important research on arising issues and opportunities that affect our collective future, while enhancing mutual understanding and collaboration between Canada and the United States. Fulbright Canada is proud to provide support to these outstanding individuals now and as alumni. One connection at a time, Fulbright Canada strives to bring people and nations together towards a more understanding world. We are excited to share in their achievements and successes and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make in their communities.

These programs would not be possible without the support of our governmental, corporate, and university partners. Fulbright Canada encourages our supporters and partners to share news about the programs and those who they are supporting or welcoming in the coming year.
