Exceptional U.S. Students Win Prestigious Fulbright Canada – Mitacs Research Awards

Year one of the Fulbright Canada–Mitacs Globalink Program will support 60+ U.S. students

The global pandemic may have delayed international travel, but it has not stopped the flow of talent and ideas across the Canada-U.S. border. This summer, 68 talented American students are undertaking virtual research projects with Canadian professors under the new Fulbright Canada–Mitacs Globalink Program. The virtual exchange allows some of the brightest U.S. students in a wide range of disciplines to pursue a research project with top-tier academics at Canadian universities.

“We are very proud of this initiative, especially as it has emerged at a challenging time for both student researchers and scholars,” said Dr. Michael K. Hawes, President, and CEO of Fulbright Canada. “Canada has some of the best research-intensive academic institutions in the world who are keen to welcome talented students from the United States and beyond. We are thrilled to work with Mitacs to provide that opportunity. We all have an obligation to ensure that innovation and opportunity continue to drive productivity, especially during difficult times.”

“Mitacs is proud to partner with Fulbright Canada. Mitacs Globalink not only helps to advance innovation across all industry sectors through global research collaborations, but it also boosts our economy and helps attract some of the world’s best students to our universities for advanced degrees,” said Mitacs CEO and Scientific Director, Dr. John Hepburn.

The program is a partnership between two storied organizations. Fulbright, now operating in Canada for more than 30 years, is one of the world’s most prestigious academic exchange programs. Mitacs is a not-for-profit organization that fosters growth and innovation in Canada by solving business challenges with research solutions from academic institutions. Mitacs is funded by the Government of Canada along with the Government of Alberta, the Government of British Columbia, Research Manitoba, the Government of New Brunswick, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Government of Nova Scotia, the Government of Ontario, Innovation PEI, the Government of Quebec, the Government of Saskatchewan, and the Government of Yukon.

The plan is to offer this program and others, in-person in the coming academic year.
