Congratulations to the 2022-2023 Fulbright Canada Cohort

The essence of intercultural education is the acquisition of empathy – the ability to see the world as others see it. … The exchange program is not a panacea but an avenue of hope. J. William Fulbright

For students and scholars, September is a time for new beginnings – setting research goals, connecting with new colleagues and classmates, and imagining a future full of possibilities. It is an especially exciting time for those who are beginning an international academic exchange.

This year we are pleased to share that 115 Fulbright Awards and Killam Fellowships have been granted to incredible students and scholars who are leaders in their respective fields of study and in the communities where they live and work. Their research addresses big and important issues, crosses disciplinary boundaries, and reflects our two societies' curiosity and diversity. The projects are both ambitious and impressive.

We are pleased to see that so many of our students and scholars have directly addressed issues around equity, diversity, inclusion, and access (EDIA) as they tackle climate change, resource scarcity, Indigenous governance, health care access, and equal and fair representation.

We wish everyone in the new cohort all the best as they embark on their international exchange and engage with the Fulbright Canada community. Having recently celebrated the 75th anniversary of the global Fulbright program, we are especially mindful of how potentially transformative this experience can be. It is much more than a scholarship and goes beyond individual research projects. It is an investment in mutual understanding and a commitment to shared goals and common purposes.

I congratulate each of you on being selected as Fulbright Scholars and Killam Fellows. It is a signal honour and one that is richly deserved. I encourage you to take every opportunity that this exchange experience offers, as it will surely contribute in meaningful ways to your professional and personal lives.Michael K. Hawes, President and CEO, Fulbright Canada

These programs would not be possible without the support of our government, corporate, and university partners. Fulbright Canada encourages all of our partners to share news about the programs and the people they are supporting or welcoming in the coming year.

We urge you to take a closer look at the research that will be taking place in the coming year and reach out if you wish to connect with any of the award recipients.
