A Bright Future: Introducing the 2018-2019 Fulbright Canada Grantees

Two countries. Three award categories. One hundred and five outstanding individuals working to enhance our collective future.

Fulbright Canada is pleased to formally introduce the 2018-2019 cohort of Fulbright Scholars, Fulbright Students, and Killam Fellows! The incoming cohort consists of grant recipients from three core programs: the Fulbright Scholar Program, for established scholars and professionals in their field, the Fulbright Student Program, for students and researchers who are pursuing a master’s degree, a PhD, or conducting independent research, and the Killam Fellowships Program, for young leaders pursuing an undergraduate degree. According to Dr. Michael Hawes, Fulbright Canada CEO, and alumni, "This is an exciting group of students and scholars whose important work has the promise to positively impact our lives."

These awards are designed to support exceptional citizens who are leaders in their academic fields, who show great potential, and who see value in enhancing mutual understanding and community engagement. During their residential academic exchange experience, in their neighbouring country, the grantees are encouraged to engage in the community they are studying or working in so as to enhance their cultural understanding and, in many instances, find new ways of looking at their field. Further, through working and learning with new colleagues and experiencing new places and cultures, many grantees find opportunities for international collaboration, with the potential to foster immense personal development and inspiration.

Their projects are innovative and address emergent challenges. Dr. Colin Farrelly, Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Social Sciences, from Queen’s University, will study “Justice in the Genomic Age” at the University of Hawai’i Mānoa. Fulbright Student, Mr. Marc Andre Begin, from the Université de Sherbrooke, is working to design a portable robotic device to assist people with upper-limb disabilities during his time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Much of the work that will take place this year is reflective of shifting political and social realities. To highlight some of these projects, Fulbright Student, Charlotte Sabourin, from McGill University, is heading to the University of California, Los Angeles to explore the implications of Immanuel Kant's conception of sexuality for the legal status of women. Incoming Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Virginia S. Drywater-Whitekiller, from Northeastern State University, will study “Indigenous Cultural Resilience Supporting Higher Education Pathways” at Vancouver Island University. Canadian Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Brian J.R. Stevenson, will complete a research project entitled, “Reimagining NAFTA: What is Missing?”.

The 2018-2019 cohort also includes five Fulbright Arctic Initiative II Scholars, part of an international collaborative research team of sixteen scholars from the Arctic Circle countries. Their work, which will occur over the course of 18 months, seeks to conduct research that supports the ongoing development of sustainable economies and resilient communities in the Arctic.

Fulbright Canada’s programs are designed to support innovation and important research on arising issues and opportunities that affect our collective future, while enhancing mutual understanding and collaboration between Canada and the United States. Fulbright Canada is proud to provide support to these outstanding individuals now and as alumni. We are excited to share in their achievements and successes and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make in their communities.
